UltiMail Lite has been the most problematical program of the IAK by far. It may help if you keep repeating the mantra, "it was free.... it was free.... it was free....". I was unable to get the first three versions to work with Voicenet but the last tw o versions 2.10 and above have worked well, for the most part, once installed; and it is a very full-featured program. If its too slow , or you can't get it to work, many people like Post Road Mailer or the shareware PMMAIL.
Set Up
First get the current version from Retrieve Internet Software Updates . Better still, get the beta CSD!
Under Mail Cabinet, Cabinet, Settings you will probably want to set your signature field (under Letter) and the Time Zone Options. You can just leave Sessions and < second page of the Letter section, I strongly recommend that you uncheck View all letters in one window. If it is checked and you open a second letter (for whatever reason) while editing or composing a letter, all of your work will be uncer emoniously dumped without warning.
It is possible to set up Ultimail Lite for multiple users or multiple providers. Copy umail.pro to a new name such as umail2.pro, then edit it to change the :USER field as appropriate, with * as the password. Also delete the PROVIDER: Advantis sectio n. Create an Ultimail desktop object for umail.exe and add /pro=umail2.pro to the parameters line. Start the new copy of Ultimail and finish setting up the new version from the configuration notebook.
Sometimes it becomes necessary to alter the information, such as your password or the server name, used by Ultimail. One way to do this is to make the necessary changes in the Dial Other Providers app, then make the changes described in the next secti on for eleminating the startup dialog box. Log on to your provider and start Ultimail and it will update to the new information.
How do I ...
The program strikes a lot of people as non-intuitive so read the available documentation and run the tutorial. I admit that I am honored alumni of the "If all else fails, read the manual!" school; but if you ever read any documentation, read this one. (Or at least right and left click on everything, like the blank text field and the paper clip icon.)
One "missing feature" that many people complain about is the inability to automatically quote when sending a reply to a letter. It is available as Forward to sender under the Letter drop-down menu. You can also create an icon for it by ri ght clicking in the blank portion of the icon bar and selecting Create item from the pop-up menu.
Ultimail Lite does not provide the option of downloading email from the provider while leaving a copy still available on the server. There is a trick which will make this possible if you require it, though. For advanced users only: Using yo ur favorite binary editor, you will have to edit POP.DLL Look for the string "DELE %d" Change the single occurance of this string to "STAT %d". From now on instead of deleting the email from your provider once it is downloaded, Ultimail will send a har mless Stat command.
Solutions to problems you might encounter after upgrading:
Currently there is a flaw in Ultimail Lite that may affect you if your userid is longer than 8 characters. Because of the way it is designed, on a FAT based system this will cause the program to fail. At present the only "fix" known is to switch to the HPFS file system which allows filenames greater than 8 characters. There is an APAR on this, so a fix may become available
--Fixed!--Another known bug which will cause the program to crash occurs when attempting to import a part. If you select Import Part under the Letter dropdown, then try to change director ies in the normal manner, Ultimail closes. The offical fix is to type in the full path and name into the name field. Other work-arounds include using drag and drop instead or first moving the file into the default directory.
--Fixed!--There is a bug in Ultimail in which the offset from UTC (GMT for us oldtimers) is set incorrectly in the header of outgoing mail. Judging from the mail I have received from other Ultimail Lit e users, the problem is universal if you have a negative offset (locations West of Greenwich). It is a good idea to fix this since it can cause your mail to be sorted incorrectly and display inc
Many users of Warp Connect find that they cannot send mail after installing Connect. The problem may be with AFINET.SYS The bad version date is (I think) 2703-95; the fixed version is 08-07-95 or later. You can get the new version by downloading ic10390.zip. This file contains the newer AFINET.SYS as well as a new version of inetcfg.exe. Unzip the afinet.sys into the \MPTN\PROTOCOL dir and the inetcfg.exe file into \MPTN\BIN. I don't know what the update to inetcfg.e xe fixes, so if you have any problem with the Connect version, you may want to try this.
You may encounter a problem when trying to transfer large binary files. In UMAILSRV.PRO splitsize is set to 262144. The recommended splitsize is 250000, so using the system editor change splitsize = '262144' to splitsize = '250000'
The first time you try to run UltiMail you may get a dialog box asking for your name, password, etc. When you fill in the information it just keeps cycling back to the same dialog box. Open the file \tcpip\umail\UMAIL.PRO in the editor. Add the tex t shown below, substituting your ID and name (notice the period on the fourth line). The next time you try to launch it, you will get the dialog box as before; but then Ultimail should start. It will also add the password and reply_id to the :USER section. Obvious, huh? Time to repeat the mantra.
:USER id = 'jsilvia' name = 'John Silvia' reply_domain = 'omni.voicenet.com' .
One very annoying but nonfatal problem is the dreaded Perpetual Password Prompt. This is similar tothe previous problem. Every time you start Ultimail Lite it asks for your name and password. There are at least three ways to fix this.
Another problem some users report after upgrading is that the program stops with a sys3175 message. This reportedly can usually be fixed by deleteing and reinstalling . I have never had the problem so can't testify about th e fix.
If you try to open a letter or create a new letter and the background becomes "hashed" but nothing apears to open, check the :SESSION tag in your x:\TCPIP\UMAIL\UMAIL.PRO file. If it contains a line with load = 'demand', change it to load = 'auto matic'.
If Ultimail Lite has been working then it suddenly will no longer log on even though you have not changed or updated anything, chances are the problem lies at your servers end. Try contacting them and ask them to kill the POP daemon which is proba bly still running. This can happen with some systems if the connection is dropped while you are retrieving mail.
Queued mail can be the source of several problems. If you get a message about sending queued mail whenever you connect followed by a message indicating that it could not be sent, the only way to eliminate this is to erase the queued email. Simply erase everything in the tcpip\etc\mqueue directory.
Sometimes email which has been queued because it was created while off-line or because of a temporary problem, is not resent in a timely manner. To force an attempt to send queued email run mailq.exe.
If your server supports STMP instead of a POP mail server, you need to get additional instructions for setting up Ultimail Lite. This is widely available in the file, umsmtp03.zip
People occasionally experience a problem where email cannot be read unless they click on the paper clip and then double click on contents. If you experience this problem, in UMAIL.PRO under :LETTER you will find a line that says, open = 'after' Change t his to open = 'first'
